We want to make the water all pretty and blue. So will it kill my fish?

find a different way to make the water pretty. someone suggested lights and rocks. you have a fish, that theoretically should already be in a much larger space swimming freely. you may be opting to shine blue light on it all the time, whereas sunlight is what filters through water naturally. don't pour chemicals into its very source of oxygen!

if you're going to get a pet, even if it is "just a fish," please treat it with some level of compassion. thanks for asking before you did it. :)

yes, it has been known to harm the fish. while you can treat the water with stuff to make it colored like conditioners and such and you can get lights and backgrounds and rocks, why would you want to.

your goal is to make it look pretty, but do you want the tank to get noticed or the fish? most people buy fish to look nice, so let the fish look nice. if you add all kinds of colored rocks and lights and things people are going to notice the tank not the fish. so why not just set up a tank without a fish? instead try things that compliment the fish without taking away from it, natural colored rocks a few live plants, keep the water crystal clear so the fish can easily be seen... ect. if you get pretty but natural things in the tank it will look good still, but still allow the fish to be the prettiest thing inside.

just something to think about.

Why would you want to do that!? Of course it will harm the fish!!!

If you want the water to look blue without hurting any fish, get blue lightbulbs. You can even get small waterproof blue LEDs that you can put directly in the tank.

Its not natural and any dyes or paints will poison your fish, even coloured gravel, ornaments or other unnatural things people stick in tanks. If you want your water to appear blue, buy a blue light. Look for one for a marine tank (attinic) or in the reptile section. If its not the sole like, it is fine.

Food colour can also dye your fish, silicone seal and anything else in your tank. Your fish will eventually die.

I would ask the pet store, but I assume it would be harmful, just because fish don't just 'live' in water, they breathe it. Any foreign chemicals you put into their atmosphere probably aren't good unless they're specifically for water treatment or medicinal purposes.

food coloring will not hurt most freshwater fish, but the heavy metals used for pigment will hurt some saltwater fish and definitely inverts.
