Go to Home Depot or Lowe's and pick up some granules specifically for fire ants, sprinkle it around their home. They will take the granules into the nest, feed it to the queen etc and you will have a better chance of getting rid of the colony. They then begin to eat eachother further poisoning the lot.

We have a remedy here in SC (home of the fire ants) that seems to work well: Liberally sprinkle instant grits (must be instant) over and around the mound. The ants will eat on the granules, they'll swell with the naturel liquids in the ant, and pop - they will expand beyond their bearable size. Translation: they blow up! Give it a try...
good luck

DON'T LAUGH,,,take a bucket of water, mix 1/4 - 1/2 cup of dish washing liquid (I use Dawn) to the water and stir. Pour over the mound.
This also works wonders on wasp nest. Take a glass of water, mix 4-5 drops in water and stir. Through the contents on the nest and watch the wasp fall dead immediately. Just think,,this is what people use to clean dishes also.
