Skeleton equations are sometimes called unbalanced equations.
Here is the example equation:
H2 + O2 ---> H2O : It is an unbalanced equation because there are UNEQUAL numbers of at least one atom on each side of the arrow.

In this example, there are two atoms of hydrogen on each side, BUT there are two atoms of oxygen on the left side and only one on the right side. Can you see?

To do these equations, you need to remember
the formulae for most of the chemicals (for instance, water is H2O; the formula for hydrogen is H2; and the formula for oxygen is O2). A skeleton equation is just a way of using the formulas to indicate the chemicals that were involved in the chemical reaction.

"Mg + O2 --> MgO." This skeleton equation shows that magnesium reacts with oxygen to form magnesium oxide. It also shows that the formula for magnesium is Mg, for oxygen is O2, and for magnesium oxide is MgO.

The reactants on the left produce a product on the right, by combing with each other (like MgO), or exchanging parts of atoms, and many more, depending on the chemical reaction and reactants involved.

For example when an acid reacts with an alkali it always produces a salt and water:
Acid + alkali --> salt + water:
H2SO4 + 2NaOH --> Na2SO4 +H2O
Or:
Acid + carbonate --> salt + water + carbon dioxide.

There is no an easy way remembering these rules except remembering them by heart, which can be found in any GCSE/ AS level Chemistry books, which explain which parts go where in a reaction.

A skeleton equation is just showing the reactants and products. The equation is not yet balanced
