The short memory if goldfish is a myth. Many people have trained goldfish to do things to get food, like ring a bell. If they could not remember anything after a few minutes then they would never ring the bell the second time. I think goldfish enjoy both other fish as well as us. They will often follow us in their tank when we walk through the room. I don't think they get depressed or lonely but they do like company.

As others have said, the 3 second memory is just a myth. I think people made that up so they feel better about cramming them in tiny bowls.
Goldfish are a community fish so yes they do like to have other goldfish for company but if left alone long enough they may just get used to you and the other people that walk around the tank for company.

No but if you want a friend for it you can get a pleco to eat the algae. If you want to add more goldfish , get the same type. I mean fancy goldfish with their kind and regualr skinny comets with their own. Regular goldfish are faster and more aggressive than the fance variety

my full grown black moor goldfish is the friendly giant. most black moors are extemely territorial but i tested him out by putting in 2 feeder fish and he dodnt btoher them on bit!
he usually always just site near the bottom cause he is so large! but everytime i add in new fish he swims around and seems alot more happier! more active. but theres somethign wrong with my aquarium. everytime i addin new fish they die within the first 2 weeks! i dont understand.. i think there is something in the aquarium that he is immune to and just kills the other fish off... =( so he is lonely mst of the time =(
its sad

ACTUALLY mythbusters proved the who short term memory thing wrong. They do have a longer memory span then 3 or 15 seconds.
I doubt they'd mind though. It has you for company right?

I don't think so but having one fish in a tank looks drepessing. but make sure you have a big enough fish tank for mulitple fish. remember for every inch of fish their should be 2 gal. of water

i don't think they mind living solo...but if they have a couple friends in the tank it might make the fishy happier because it will be closer to their natural habitat if they are with other fishies...lol
