220 degrees is not uncommon for Grand Am's. Does the fan come on if you let it go higher (with no heat or a/c on)? I don't think you need much more than a good flush, good coolant and a thermostat for good measure.

ok i had this problem in my 91 buick regal and my 89 olds cutlas and both times my uncle wired my fan up straight to my battery so when ever i turn my car on my fan comes on to. it was an engine coolant sencor but there was like 3 diffrent sencors and my uncle just used wire and wired it up and both cars stayed cool with out paying alot to get fixed. if you have an uncle, brother or a friend that messes with cars id ask him to wire it up for you like that. oh and my 87 pontiac did it too. so thats what id do if i was you its a cheap fix that works

i own a repair shop, and its probably the fan relay gone bad on it,this will cause it to not kick on,,other than that if you have this checked,,and it don't help,,you may have to pay a shop to find it,,they also have a fusible link that burns in to,,and causes this to happen,,but its hard to find one of those when they go bad,,good luck hope this help,s.

these cars have a few problems that can cause overheating. take it to a garage and have them properly diagnose it. if you work on it and then can't solve it, and take it to a garage, and then they fix it and something goes wrong, and you take it back, there is reasonal doubt on the work being tampered with, and it may void the warranty.

could be relay, switch, thermostat, low fluid, clogged radiator. etc.
does your fan ever kick on?
fluid level ok?
thermostat good? -- pull it and see what happens. could be a clogged rad. too.
Hope this helps and let me know if you need anything else.

i would bring it to the dealer and have them diag it for you then if you want you can fix it yourself once you know what is wrong. is still sounds like a fan switch to me though.
