A lot depends on when china would have discovered America. For instance if it was 300 years before the Europeans did China would have quite a hold on America. If it was quite a bit closer, say 50 years, I would assume that at some point there would have been a war between China and the European nations for control of America. If China won, we might be hearing tales of the "Wild East" instead of the Wild West because the expansion pattern would be reversed. Perhaps a war would result in a draw or maybe there would be no war at all. In that case China and the european countries would both share America. In the latter example I would say the European countries would not be too much affected. When European countries were making money off of North America it was mostly the east that was settled and the western part did not play a major role. If China controlled ALL of America I still don't think it would have affected the europeans very much. Most of the money the British made was through trade and it would be safe to assume that they would have been just as happy to trade with Chinese as former British subjects. Other things to consider would be how this would affect things like tobacco and slavery. Would tobacco ever have really become popular? The type the native Americans used was not what became popular in England but rather a cross between two different strains that was developed in Virginia. Perhaps then slavery would never be introduced if there was no tobacco crop to harvest. I don't really know the historical chinese view on slavery so maybe they might have come up with a crop that results in 5 times as many slaves imported! Who knows? What would the Chinese interaction with the native Americans be like? Better or worse? The chinese America could have seen their need for independance and broke away from China just like the original colonies did. A milion things could be similar or totally different...hope this helps some.

This is a fascinating question. This first point is blindingly obvious, if you think about it, and that is the US would have been 'discovered' the other way on, with landings on the West Coast, rather than the east. Had the Europeans landed on the East Coast, as in fact they did, who knows what would have happened. Presumably the US would never have existed as one country. Would there have been wars between the two sides, say on the prairies? Would the Chinese have treated Native Americans any better - that is incapable of answer. There is a fascinating novel which explores this 'alternative history' - 'The Years of Rice and Salt' by Kim Stanley Robinson - it's well worth seeking out and reading if the subject interests you (it does start from the premise, however, that Europeans were all wiped out by the Black Death)
