No. Unless your state has specific laws on the subject you can video tape people in public places. You have no expectation to privacy in a class room. Now if your teacher taped you in the bathroom that would be a different story. The only way the teacher could get in trouble is if the school has a policy against video taping students.

Some liberal types would say yes. I say NO! There is no expectation of privacy in a PUBLIC school. Unless its something perverse of course. Don't listen to anyone else here, I am right. By the way, no you do not have a lawsuit here. You will not get rich. Your teacher should not be fired. You a punk kid who needs to sit down, shut up and do what he's told until he's 18!!!

You are part of that group, right?
The group that demands A's in all classes, but yet refuses to do homework, or go to school to be a student...if you (or your stupid friend) want to sleep, why not tell mommy and daddy and just stay home?
No, it is not illegal. Some principals install video cameras in classrooms.

No it is not. They would need parental permission if they plan to use it on some sort of website, advertising, etc. But just to show your parents or the principal how much of a screw off you are in class.... I'd say BUSTED.
Sleep at night, pay attention in class and graduate.

No, it isn't.
The only possible "illegality" is what the tape gets used for. Videoing lazy students helps document useless behavior and doesn't allow the offenders to deny their actions.

we started videoing students without their knowledge back in 98 to try and teach them about themselves, sometimes when you view yourself from the outside looking in you can see the changes that may need to happen. Unfortunatly the courts felt otherwise and we were not allowed back in the girls changing rooms again and our website was shutdown immediatly.

Definately its illegal as the student is unaware of teacher's such advances. He must take permission who's video he wish to shoot.

Many schools and states have different policies. Like fof example they cannot use it to publicize anything for the school (function, school dance, school projects, stuff like that) without parent consent, as for catching you sleeping, I hope they give that tape to your parents.
