How are they assigned movies? Where does their budget come from?

The great thing about director is there's no single path to it.

You usually aren't assigned movies until you've already made it big. Instead, you look for movies.

If you advertise your company in the local phonebook (or in the industry phone books), you sometimes get offered jobs by desperate screenwriters, propagandists, and people who want to launch the career of a relative, but you might turn these down.

The budget can come from a studio, private investors, government subsidies, a bank loan, or whatever. My first one was a bank loan.
