I would stay home as long as possible, actually. At least until your contractions are in a regular pattern. Otherwise they might a) send you home anyway or b) "convince" you to take Pitocin to speed your labor up because doctors are usually freaking impatient. You can walk around for weeks at 4 cm dilated and nothing might happen; with my first I was three-four cms for quite a while and didn't go into labor until 2-3 weeks later. With my second, a week before she was born there was nothing going on down there and then we had the baby. I would try to relax, do some deep breathing and get on your hands and knees to try and change baby's position if you're experiencing a lot of back pain, as this could be back labor.
You can call your doctor's office and the on-call staff will direct you in what to do; otherwise it might be safe to wait it out a little while longer. As long as your water hasn't broken you should have plenty of time, provided you don't live six hours away from a hospital or something. Otherwise labor and delivery staff can get very impatient and try to rush things by inducing you, which you would probably be best to avoid.

First time your contractions if they are the real thing they will be close together or you will experience at least 5 in a hour. Second call you doctor and leave a message. Some signs of real labor are:rupture of water, regular contractions, or bloody show. Go to a hospital if contractions happen past a hour just to be safe. GOOD LUCK

This is DEFINITELY a question for your doctor! Call the office and have the answering service page the on-call doctor. That's why they have someone on-call.
If your contractions get closer together, then definitely go to the hospital!
Good luck!

They shouldn't offer you a labor inducing drug unless you stop dialating.
I think the old "rule of thumb" is to go when the contractions are every 5 minutes apart, but I am not sure...
You have the right to decline medicine until your OB/GYN gets there, so I say call.

Call your doctor's office. Even though they are closed, there should be an answering service who can page the on call doctor for you.

I believe I would at least go to the emergency room and let them have a look.

If you were a cow, I would put you in the barn and prepare for a calving.
