My daughter is in 2nd grade and this is her first science fair and she's really excited. The problem is...i hated science growing up. We were going to do the Splenda vs. sugar project, but i'm not too sure now. Any other ideas??

There is a great book by DK publishing called 101 great science experiments. You can get it at your local bookstore or at Amazon.com. It has a lot of simple ideas and each idea is colorfully illustrated and the instructions are very easy to follow. I highly recommend getting this book.

I am an elementary school teacher and the best thing to do is to help your daughter with a project of which she can have ownership and understanding. Help your daughter see that a true science experiment starts with a guess (hypothesis). A great poject for second grade students is one in which you use two identical plants and water one with water, and one with another liquid such as soda. Aski your daughter to make a guess about which plant will grow better. Track the findings over the course of a week or two, and then bring the plants in for the science fair. The kids may start to think about what soda does to them! :)

2nd grade? Something easy to do would be the solar system.and a short report about space. Is this her project or yours? Some parents forget that it is the child's project are what they want to do. There are many things in science that can be used in a science fair, i.e. magnets, space environment, plant growing, animals, foods and nutrition, mechanical devices and motion, medicine and disease, to name a few. What is she interested in, if she is excited about this project? Let her decide and give her support, but don't do it for her. If it isn't a winner, don't worry or be upset, just have her persevere. Many scientists had to experiment often before they had success.
