When a new President is elected, it is because he appeared to be more electable than the person he ran against, or the electorate was tired of the party that was in the White House.
Some times the electorate selects the best of the two evils. There are many factors that go into electing a president. How he runs, does he make as many mistakes as the other guy, if he does how does he handle it.
When John F. Kennedy ran he was elected because the women thought he was cuter than Nixon.
I hope this has been of some use to you, good luck.

Judging from the latest presidential races I'd say it's due to a combo of dumb luck, dirty tricks, voter stupidity and disconnect, and above all kizz-ash.

It is because you VOTED for him! Like Bush and the Bush before him! You do it to yourself, by voting, or NOT voting! It is your choice!

You're joking, it's who spends more money to polish himself and tarnish his opponent.
