The software itself is not illegal. But it is illegal to share material (music, video, etc) that has a copyright.

Limewire is legal. Sharing copyrighted material without permission from the creator of the work is illegal and could land you in some hot water. Using Limewire to share copyrighted material is illegal.

It, and other file-sharing software, are popular because it allows people free access to material that they would otherwise have to pay for. Limewire & Kazaa are trying to prove that the activity of people using their software is not their problem or their fault but that of the user. Either way, it's the user who has illegally acquired copyrighted material that will eventually be sued by RIAA and the MPAA (et al.).

Limewire and Kazaa and other file-sharing programs encourage a kind of shared guilt thing. They allow access to your hard drive by outsiders in exchange for your accessing someone else's hard drive. They will do this through different methods, but still - would you want strangers walking into your house, using your toothbrush, and leaving without so much as saying "Hello and Good Evening"?

It is illegal as decided in a US Supreme Court Case where the RIA won cases against Napster and later Kazaa. There is a current case involving Limewire. While it is illegal, since so many people use it, it would be impossible to stop all of it.

The site iteself, according to American law, is illegal. However, I believe it's server is located overseas (New Zealand rings a bell for some reason, although I'm not really sure where), where those laws do not exist, so that's how Limewire escapes US litigation.

I have read news articles of people getting prosecuted for using it. I deleted it when I saw that. I think a lot of teens use it and think it is like you tube or my space.

It's illegal because you are not paying royalties for the music you download, and that music is copyrighted.
They are not quiet about it because since millions of people are sharing music authorities can't track down all of them.

Yes it is really illegal, even if you pay for it. The only reason it's poplular is because it's free adn easy. I'm sure they'll proabably get sued soon though

Yes it really is illegal. It's popular because it's free. Some people like to think its not illegal because it's shared files but it really is illegal
