Er...you seem to suggest that 1,3,4 are exclusive of 2. That's obviously not possible.

The problem with 4 is that the operative word is "try": people in full throttle on the modern day career path often work more than 40 hours a week. Imagine being an attorney: research, court time, travel to the office and back again, time with clients...the list goes on and on. What happens when jr. gets the chicken pox? Who is it expected to stay at home nursing jr. back to health? What about that big career? The fact is that ethically and realistically speaking, the big career must take second place at this point in a woman's life. Not surprisingly, that's exactly what happens. There is no such thing as a "SuperWoman" - or superhuman; everyone has a finite amount of energy and there are still only 24 hours in a day. This is a big reason for the "glass ceiling" encountered by female professionals (although clearly not the only reason). The bottom line is that the designated primary caregiver - usually the woman - is encumbered in a manner her male counterpart generally is NOT.

The correct answer to your question is 1. Again though, the age of the individual matters greatly. After the children have fledged and left the nest, career-minded women often FLOURISH in their chosen field because they no longer are encumbered by family constraints. Nowadays though, the women whose children have fledged are left being primary caregiver to her own and her husband's ageing PARENTS!

Gee I've been all of those at one time or another and when the last chick left the nest... I redecorated. My empty nest didn't last long, when the grandkids came along I found myself babysitting and helping the newly married kids with their homes and of course more and more grandkids as they came along. I think I'd like a little emptier nest to be honest, I'm getting older and I'd like to travel a bit with my husband. I think its a category you didn't list that may have the most difficulty, women without husbands due to death or divorce. Even there, I know a few of those and they do quite well as long as they have some money. In fact, I'd say among my ordinary group, empty nest doesn't last very long.

All of the above! Your baby is your baby-especially when they leave home! A mom is a mom, is a mom!! It doesn't matter how you want to categorize it - empty nest syndrome affects all mothers!!! You can't explain it unless you've had it happen to you! It's one of the most awful feelings there is!!! Been there from personal experience!!!

Any woman that has ever had a child will be affected by the 'empty nest'. Regardless.
