Given the costs of college these days, some poorer people are still unable to afford college even with loans and other benefits. Does the U.S. government do enough? I know in some countries like Scotland and Singapore the government pays for a large portion of the cost of college.

People can take loans out like I do. ANyway, you get out of education what you put in to it. You want it, go work for it. That poor people stuff is just crap. You can start off at a communityy college for cheap then transfer to a bigger state school. You don't need to do all four years at a private school. Anyway, I did comm college, transferred to a state school, and now I'm in law school. It's all on loans. Please, people always want crap handed to them. You have to work and borrow sometimes..No one is entitled to higher education. If a person really wants it, they can figure out a way to get it...

and another thing: If "basic education" sucks, blame the kids, the parents, and the culture. Don't throw more money at it. Those other things are the problem with elementary, middle, and high schools..

I know they don't.. People are so concerned about the state of welfare but nothing is being done about the costs of college.. Some people would love to go to college and get off welfare but how can they.. As a freshman the most you can get in pell, and all loans is about $9000.. that won't even cover school (then u are $7000 further in debt). It's kind of a catch 22..u need a college education for a good paying job but u need money for that education.. How can poor people win..

The answer is "absolutely not". Not everyone has equal access.

However, the poor and minorities have a considerable amount of aid available to them.

You will probably find that the people with the least ability to afford college are lower-middle class kids who don't qualify for minority scholarship programs.

We are clearly putting ourselves at a disadvantage in the world marketplace by making students take out mortgage-sized loans just to get an education.

No, everyone does not deserve equal education at the college level. Minorities have a multitude of scholarships available, and poor people have many options available to them. It is only around 2,000 to attend a public college, and so many people think it is beneath the, when they get the same education for 1/16 th the price.

The government still subsidizes college education a great deal here, and given the range of options available, qualified people do have financial access to education.

I wonder how many people we could have sent to a 4 year college or maybe even just some 2 year community college program for the price of the Iraq war?

no... and more importantly... people don't have the same access to BASIC EDUCATION...

schools in inner cities and other poverty stricken areas almost always have sub-standard teachers, instructional materials and home support for their education...

I think there is more equal access to higher education than baisc... at least if you can get to college, you can get loans and grants most of the time...

but without that decent basic public education, college, and life in general, are much harder to get into and succeed in...

I think we need to work much harder on elementary-high schools... than we do on college level... one step at a time...

No I do not think there is enough to make sure everyone has an opportunity for college. It is so expensive that there really are people that simply can not afford to go and that is sad because how can they have a chance to better themselves and climb up when they can not afford to
