Does Mark McGwire belong in the Hall of Fame? How does a guy like Goose Gossage get more votes every year, even though his stats remain the same?

I find it amusing people here said the hall-of-fame is a character thing. Baseball is not about character. Baseball is about what you do between the white lines. You can put whatever you want on their plaque, like "he was a terrible person", or "he abused women and gambled on the game." On Barry Bonds you can put in huge letters, "He was a suspected steroid user, and a real piece of trash as a person." But in little letters underneath it, you put, "He was probably the greatest talent the game ever saw." Look at Ty Cobb, who was a racist and member of the KKK. He is in the HOF. Babe Ruth was a drunk and abused women. The HOF is full of people who might not have been great people off the field, but on the field they were the best of the best. Big Mac, Palmerio, Pete Rose, Shoeless Joe, and Barry Bonds all deserve to be in the Hall of Fame.

McGwire should be in. The same writers that are keeping him out now were "hush hush" 10-15 years ago when ANDRO and steroids (that were not banned by MLB) were being used. He has better stats than David Justice and Travis Fryman and both of those two will be in next year. Who would you rather have? The Bash brothers and McGwire Sosa HR chase were some of baseballs most profitable times and they loved it. Nothing he did was against the rules and nothing has been proved. Rich Gossage just keeps getting more votes due to the classes of Hall nominees getting weaker. Goose deserves to be in and will be next year as that may be the worst class of nominees ever!

Mark McGwire has no place among great men who played the game of baseball. He should not be in the Hall of Fame.

Goose Gossage got 70% of the vote. More than likely he will get in on the next ballot.

One of the requirements for the Baseball Hall of Fame is character. The voters think McGwire used steroids which is cheating. Cheating is a sign of bad character. As long as McGwire is alive he will not be in the Hall of Fame. The same will be with Barry Bonds.

P.S. The biggest Hall of Fame snub is Shoeless Joe Jackson. Not Pete Rose. Pete Rose was proven guilty for betting on baseball. Shoeless Joe Jackson was never found guilty of rigging the 1918 World Series. It was just an assumption for who the players that set up the World Series was. Shoeless Joe Jackson was the only one on his team to hit over .300 and the only one on his team to hit a homer run. He rigged it for his team to lose the 1918 World Series!?! I don't think so.

Mark McGwire does not belong in the hall. Only the true greats belong there and he's not one of them

Goose Goosage should more than likey get in within the next 3 ballots or so.

I don't t think I would vote for McGwire. He was one dimensional. Goose Gossage gets more votes each year because the voters don't believe there are any better players on the ballot.

We all know the issues with Mac. i am gonna focus more on your second question. I think guys like Goose get more votes every year because of campaigns to get them elected, but more so, because time goes by and shows year byyear that no one else is really doing the things that Goose did. He is appreciated more and more because it is becoming apparent that others just are not doing what he did. (save games and pitch 2-3 innings all the time) In short, it is becoming more obvious that he was/is a unique player and an innovator.

McGwire doesn't get my vote....he cheated....maybe not according to the letter of the baseball rules, but to me he cheated. To go one step further, Palmeiro would never get a vote from me, and neither would Canseco (he drops off the ballot anyway, I think)...and most absolutely, Balco Barry doesn't get my vote...which is a shame, because even without the 'roids he has a Hall of Fame career....now he's just another cheater.

I would vote in Pete Rose before Iwould vote in McGuire. These guys like Gossage keep getting more votes because of tese dumbass writers who play god when it comes to the HOF. Some of these jerks don't even vote. The way I see if you deserve to get in they should vote them in on the first time they are eligible. If these writers misuse their votes by not voting then they should lose their right to vote and give it to someone who gives a damn.

The Hall of Fame has less meaning every year they ignore the actual baseball accomplishments of Pete Rose. So i would have entered a write-in vote for Pete.
