When your attorney is negotiating settlement of your case, he ethically cannot accept a settlement without first getting your approval. If your attorney did this and you were not satisfied with the settlement, you should report him to your State's Bar Association, filing a legal malpractice claim against him/her.
It's difficult to opine without more facts, but just assuming that your attorney settled you case, without first discussing it with you, and probably that the settlement was severely unsatisfactory, I'd report him. Although, my question to you would be, did you cash the check? If you did not, you can still recind the offer, return the check and settlement documents, fire your current attorney, and hire another attorney to represent you in this matter. Also, if you fire your current attorney, have your new attorney handle the attorney fee issue with him.
Good Luck.
edit: Do an internet search "Louisiana State Bar Association"... of course with your State.. I just used mine. Then look for a category "discipline" ... sometimes its under public service, or regulatory functions... something along those lines, and it will give you the contact information you need.

It would be a violation of the Rules of Professional Ethics if an attorney reached a settlement agreement without the client's consent. You can file a complaint with the State's grievance panel usually administered by the State Bar Association or the judicial department.

Hey, Listen:
Your gut feeling is that your attorney is deceiving you.
There is the bar association - and it is by each county in the state. However, they usually do nothing, and they give no advice.
Your county court house will know the phone number.
Always believe in your "gut" feeling, and something sounds fishy even from here. Sometimes you can find laws and regulations online - again by your State, so you can learn if they really are deceiving.
Of course they never, never admit it.
GOD bless.

Yes...I got screwed, glued and tattoo'd by my lawyer...he did just that and many other things as well. He was disbarred by 3 other clients (I could not afford to). He was disbarred, divorced, then died. What a mess he left. Turns out he deceived about 17 of us.
There is a State Bar of Overseers or State Bar to report these things to. Do it. If you suspect it, he probably did it. The fact you don't understand what he did is a good indication he did it. That is the first clue. Good Luck. Nail him.
