Iron is the lowest energy element. It is the ultimate "ash" of both fission and fusion. It will not give you energy and will take energy to split.

There is much debate on this subject with reasonable evidence (in my opinion) that it occurs naturally via tectonic plate motion fracturing of iron bearing rock. Google "Alberto Carpinteri" "piezonuclear fission"
