Hacking is no longer what it use to be. Hacking awhile back used to be gaining access to private networks that you where not a part of and either messing up the network or steal info from the computers on the network. Hacking todays is anything that manipulates a program into doing something it wasn't designed to do, such as cheating at games by taking advantage of a bug.
Nowadays cracking is the term used when you break into a network illegally and do the stuff mentioned above.

A hacker is someone who creates and modifies computer software, or hardware. Programmers 'hack' programs, i.e. use shortcuts or ways around that don't jive with accepted practices. In computer security hacking usually refers to someone trying to break into another system without authorization. As an example if I have a server protected by a password a hacker may set up a program to systematically try every password until he finds one that works. He will then use the stolen password to gain access to my system.
