In addition to the above, I suggest reading "Keeper of the Keys," by Wilton Wynn, former Time Magazine Rome Bureau Chief. It is an excellent book and covers the modern element of that question well, at least in terms of Rome. http://www.amazon.com/Keeper-Keys-Wilton-Wynn/dp/039455762X/sr=1-1/qid=1168519523/ref=sr_1_1/105-4419174-2138020?ie=UTF8&s=books

In addition, you might look into the other parts of the Catholic Church you may be less aware of such as the Eastern Churches and the orders.

The problem is that power is widely distributed, diffused throughout the world community and the impact of 20% of the world on the rest of the world is incalculable. For example, in the mid-200's a commentator on the Church of Rome pointed out that the Church there fed 50,000 people per day. Imagine the impact that has today. How many people exist today, because those people lived. It is impossible to imagine the impact because it is so all pervasive and subtle.

Below are a few sites you may find helpful. There's lots of information at the library too. If you go to http://www.ask.com you can type in specific questions to help your research. You'll find a lot of information in Early American history as well. This should be an interesting topic. Good luck.
