I just watched a movie about Truman Capote and his book "In Cold Blood". In Cold Blood is about two drifters who killed a whole family in this small town and how it affected the whole town. True story. First book of it's kind. Today, we would classify his book as a "true crime" novel.
Anyway, you could talk about the death penalty. Truman Capote actually met and became friends with all the principal players in his books--the two criminals, the investigators, and some of the actual townspeople.
So, from the perspective of the book you can could try to persuade people for or against capitol punishment based on his experience. BTW--Truman Capote was against capitol punishment.
The movie is called "Capote" it stars Phillip Seymour Hoffmann who was nominated for and won the Oscar.

All three are phenomenal. It all depends on the kind of writing you relate to the most. In Cold Blood is one of the best books ever written, but David Sedaris is a comedic genius. Me Talk Pretty One Day is absolutely hilarious and easiest to read. The essay would probably be most entertaining and easy to write if you like to read about the humor in other people's life(Sedaris is a gay writer with a dysfunctional family and a wonderful tone of voice). The Bell Jar is a classic and would probably have the most available research or help in the writing of your essay.
Not sure if I helped. Check Amazon.com for reviews and remember, it's all a matter of taste.

I would suggest The Bell Jar, I've never heard of the last one. Considering that Capote's is the story of a murder (to the best of my knowledge) the Bell Jar would yield the greatest amount of usefulness in persuasion.
I believe it is about a young woman trying to make it in the world (sorry about the lack of specificity)

I agree with you: "In Cold Blood." For the reasons you mention. "The Bell Jar" is a book of poetry, beautiful, but hard to formulate into a thesis. "Me Talk Pretty One Day" is cute and engaging, but again, you can't use it to persuade anyone of anything. "In Cold Blood" can help you argue for or against a thesis.

If you are a college student your online library will have short clips on what the book is about and you can go to sparknotes.com. You can also go to your megasearch such as dogpile.com and type in the search the title of the book you wish and it will come up with at least one thing you can use.
