2006 done, 2007 here. Time to reflect. In the global world of sports, which player deserves to be recognized for their performance, media coverage worldwide and popularity of the sport.
For me its a close call between Federer and Cannovaro.
Federer playing pristine tennis(just not winning the French) while Cannavoro led Juventus to a title and the Italians to a title in the biggest event in sports worldwide.
Federers dominance is clear but tennis's media coverage, though strong is not as much as football. Let me know!

As I have played both soccer and tennis(I actually am a professional instructor) I pose one question to you. If you take someone who has never played either tennis or soccer, how long does it take someone to be able actually effectively and enjoyably play either of the two sports? Taking nothing away from the great and often grueling sport of soccer, there is no comparison between the greatness of Roger Federer and any other athelete in all of sport! To play tennis at the level Roger Federer does day in and day out....week in and week out...month after month.....year after year is almost too amazing for the average sports enthusiast to comprehend. Tennis is a sport that has long been and continues to be under appreciated for way too many years. There is no season...its all year long...there is no coaching...there are no subs, and players are asked to perform for hours on end at a time, often for days back to back.
Roger Federer is hands down the best athelete in sport today and will be for the next few years unless someone else posts the consistent results that he has. Winning a championship with the help of other teamates for one year or two is surely noteworthy to say the least. But in a sport where you are "alone", no one has come close to the consistent play and dominance of this once in a lifetime champion. Tom Brady is the closest in my mind...and he still is far from the record breaking run Roger Federer is on.
I urge everyone to watch this guy play....not just once...he really is amazing!

I noticed that you mentioned Cannavaro. As a strong football fan, I would never vote for him. He had an outstanding World Cup, but he spent half the year playing with a team that was sent down to the second division for having accepted bribes from bookies to fix games. That alone should keep him out of consideration. After the World Cup, he went on to play for Real Madrid, where he has been mediocre at best. So, for playing six good games in June I wouldn't give him the prize. And he still is suspect of having fixed football games.

I'd give my vote to Johan Santana, the best pitcher in baseball. But that's just me.

Tiger Woods . He had a majestic winning streak . It was unbelievable in today's sports Landscape. Sports Illustrated named Dwayne Wade of the Miami Heat. Federer winning 3 out of the 4 majors is great , best player I have ever seen.
