Your motherboard has a socket that will determine your processor options. If your socket supports a P4, then it's not a bad processor. When it was new it was top of the line although it was more expensive than the comparable AMD and it used more power (and ran hotter). These days it is no longer near the cutting edge. It is a workhorse processor that has wide acceptance.

Having said that, if your motherboard is a socket 478, I'd go with the P4 HT. If, on the other hand, you have an LGA 775, I'd cough up a bit more money and move to the Pentium D Dual Core line.

Little old (couple of years), the new Intel Processor is the Core 2 Duo, very good, best in the world right now. Would go with that one but if you must get a Pentium 4 make sure it is a 600 series and not a 500 series. 500 Series is very old and only 32 bit not 64 bit like all the new ones (including the Core 2 Duo).

I would personally get a Core 2 Duo or better. I have the core 2 duo and after feeling it's performance, I don't think I could have anything built before this. It's a new age in processors. I think that as long as your motherboard supports it, you'll kick yourself in the butt if you don't get the Core 2 Duo now.

Well its getting a bit aged, I would have recommended an AMD Athlon if you were shopping in that price range, but since you already have the motherboard you have no choice. It is not bad, just not great.
