If you want a good mixture of modern, cultural, and international, lifestyles, but without the stress and congestion of the bigger metropoli, I would suggest Fukuoka. To me, Fukuoka is the Chicago of Japan, and my favorite US city is Chicago. Not too big, not too small, close enough to the Japanese center, but independent enough not to be accused of trying to immitate them (the bigger cities). There is also an international school there so if you wanted your kids to get an American education, you are all set.
Good luck!

it all depends on your budget. I live 45 mins from Tokyo and the prices are very reasonable. I only pay 50000yen a month rent . I teach English but have a company car. It all depends on your life style, If u drink every weekend, Its tough to save money anywhere

It depends on what you're looking for.
If you like peace and quiet, fresh air and lots of nature, Hokkaido would be the best. There aren't many things to do there, but I guess you wouldn't mind if you're the kind of person who appreciates peace.
On the other hand, if you love having fun, having loads of places to go, being able to date a lot, always having something to do, Tokyo would be your #1 choice.
