Allison is very pretty, I love the nickname Ally but it does seem a little dated. I don't know any elementary age children named Allyson - more Alyssa, Alexandra, and Aaliyah's.

I don't think girls' names should end with -son. I also don't care for the nick name Ali (or Ally, or Alli) because it sounds like a narrow road behind a row of houses that I don't like driving my car on.

I like it better with one L.
But whether you like the name Alison isn't important. Do you like Ali, Alley cat, and Al? These are the nicknames that she will always have...if you don't like them, Alison might not be a good choice.
