I have a dell optiplex gx110. It is my secondary computer and has two 20gb maxtor hard drives. When they are idle they make a high piched whine and are irritating.
When they are being accesed, they make a low pitched scratching sound.
The hard drives are 5-6 years old so do i have to clean them or something?

I had taken aside my workstation as rapidly as and as rapidly as I placed it returned mutually I lost a cord which ended up in my fan and it made a clicking noises...till finally the cord grew to develop into into shrink and my computing device died. there is airborne dirt and dust/airborne dirt and dust indoors the fan or some ingredient small. by way of certainty its a working laptop or workstation you're able to ought to desire to take it aside yet I say get a can of compressed air first in the previous you anticipate its something undesirable and attempt blowing out the fan area.

you don't clean HDD's, they are probably going bad and you should back them up before they fail. Not much you can do to repair them for under $500, no kiding around, they are expensive to fix. Just back them up and replace at earliest convenience.
