would you recommend inserting my ram chips from last computer to my new one for increased performance (i have checked for compatibility)

If they are the same size and speed, absolutely. If they are a different speed than the chips in the new computer, definitely not. The will drag down the performance of the new chips to their level. If they are the same speed but a different size, check your motherboard manual. Some boards are designed to run best with matched pairs or quads, others are not.

Also consider how much memory they will add. After all, you can get 1gb of memory (2 512mb chips) for under $90.

I would need a little more info to make a definitive answer. Like how much does it have in it now, and how much would you be adding with the old chips. Would you still be able to run in dual channel. Are the old chips the same speed, because if they are slower they will slow down the new chips (even if they are compatible). Alsong as they're compatible, recomend it 100%, I did it with this comp, it's working much better now.
