Maybe I should rephrase the question.

President Bush stated...
"Victory will not look like the ones our fathers and grandfathers achieved."

When it comes to the situation in Iraq, how is "victory" for the United States defined? Is victory for the Iraqi people and victory for the U.S. one in the same?

Although, Saddam was well liked and characterized as a tyrant at best, while in power didn't he suppress most violence in the area and uphold the country's laws.

Peace and prosperity for the people of Iraq. That is all we have wanted from the very beginning.

There will never be victory in Iraq for anyone because there is no way to kill all the terorrists, there is no guarantee democracy will last, hundreds of 1000s of people will die, the US won't get any oil, the civil war will rage out of control, and more radicals on all sides will take over leadership positions that will mean a new 100 year war just like the Protestant Refomation.

It won't happen unless someone can manage to friggin' get the American people to understand what's at stake here if we bow down!

In every modern conflict, the support of the public majority contributed the most to victory, even if it was just indirect support. And people used to look at the history of OUR country (I'm talking to Americans) with pride, and realize how we've done SO much right in this world. And at least give own their country the benefit of the doubt.

Sadly, I'm not concerned that there are many people left like that. I can almost hear the huge sucking sound coming from way out east already. Just as I see President Bush having to crawl around, tail between his legs, and hold responsibility for the entire world on his shoulders, and give the same speech he's already given like 6 times.

I hate it almost as much as he does, and when I think about it too much, I get really scared.

We all need to get honest, and stop referring to what's happening in Iraq, as "the war in Iraq".
That war was finished a long time ago, and what's going on there now is sectarian violence.
These religious battles have been going on long before we arrived, and will continue long after we leave.
We have succeeded in :
1. Removing Saddam from power.
2. Installing a Democratic government by way of a free and democratic election.
3. Hanging Saddam after a fair trail
If you fail to see any "victory" there, then your brain is being sabotaged by your politics.

We are not at war in Iraq. We are occupying. Occupations fail. Always have always will. Those who forget or ignore the past are doomed to relive it. I would say the war part we won. We kicked some serious butt. We should have left and sent them the bill for it. Some crude would have been nice. I think we should pull out as soon as possible. Not tomorrow but soon. Let them fight it out. Arm the side we want to win and leave.

Victory is getting the hell outta Dodge with a sack full of distributer caps so our tanks and humvees won't run after we abandon them and that futile "war".
I used to say "take our toys and go home", but I'd settle for just going home! If we disable the equipment we leave behind, the "enemy" can't use it. Remember in Viet Nam, we drove tanks into the ocean because that was easier than loading them up and shipping them back to the states!

By crushing Iraq will to fight. People think if we sent more troop Iraq will get scared and back down. But the truth is they must understand that we run their country and if they do like they can leaveor die. Kill 100 of Iraq people for every america killed. .

There is no victory for anybody in any war. It is a lose-lose situation. 3000 of our soldiers and several hundred thousand innocent Iraqi lives - nothing can make this a victory. Just ask our country's 3000 mothers/wives/children who lost their soldiers.

As I understand it, victory is when, working with the Iraqis, we can bring stability and security to the region, and the Iraqis can sustain it on their own.

Easy, the stabilization of the country, or at least to a point where the Iraqis can handle it.
