make sure they get plenty of light (depending on the plant some only need moderate or little light some need lots of light) Do not over water. Some plants will drink water if you have a pot with a hole in the bottom with a saucer at the bottom, put a little water in and it will drink when it needs water. I also like miracle grow plant food and potting soil to re-pot my plants..
This should work, just remember to re-pot your plant when it grows so it can get bigger the roots need room to grow, plus don't ruin the roots when re-potting this can cause your plant to die I made the mistake once..

Well, first, it's window sill... but anyway, it's probably not a good idea to put plants on a window sill in the winter if you have snow and very cold temperatures. Have you put your hand on a window when it's cold outside? That cold migrates right onto the plant and houseplants don't like that kind of cold temperature. If you want plants in front of the window, I would suggest setting up shelves or some type of stand at least 12" away from the window. Then, take care of your plants just like you would any other house plant.

In the middle of winter it depends how warm your house is and how insulated the windows are. If you need to get some plants, get them home fast from wherever you buy them. Protect them if it is freezing. Find out what kind of plants you have and what kind of requirements they have for light and water. I started avacadoes and grapefruit seeds one winter in a basement apartment on the windowsill. It was fun. Just look at the plants at a garden center or a greenhouse that sells to the public. See what you like and start with a few small ones and see how they do. Cuttings in a vase can sometimes root for you and then you can plant them. Other places for plants are hooks or hangers near windows. They are a bit warmer than right on the window sill. You could get a pack of herb seeds and plant them in pots. It is really nice to have herbs indoors and then when it is summer they can be outside.
Have fun!

go to your garden center and purchase a growlight. It can be as simple as buying a single bulb that will screw into a regular lamp fixture or as elaborate a free standing tube with a ballast. Definitely get the plants away from the glass as it projects very cold air onto the plants and could cause the leaves to die back.
