Has anyone heard of any scams from Ghana? My mother received a call saying she is a winner of a sweepstake thing. I dunno what the deal is with sweepstakes. But is it possible to be a winner and the money be in a foriegn country? I kinda dont think so but I dunno. Would anybody know?

Suggest in the strongest possible terms that your mother has nothing further to do with this, it's a well known scam. If she pursues the matter she's going to have to forward payment of some kind... admin fee, clearance fee, commission charge etc etc etc. If she does it will be the last she sees of her money.

These scams are primarily operated by Nigerians, Ivorians and Zimbabweans who sound very professional and legitimate but that's because they make millions from these and similar scams.

There's loads of scams like this telling you you've been selected at random, have won some lottery you've never heard of or your e-mail address has been selected in a draw you never entered. They're all scams but sadly some people do get duped and end up losing large amounts of cash, having their bank accounts emptied or their identities stolen. These scammers sometimes pose as a reputable organisation and not long back there was a similar scheme purporting to be from Yahoo.

Beware and remember 1) you never get something for nothing and 2) if it sounds too good to be true it probably is.
