We may be leaving New England and are considering Colorado. We have 3 children and love outdoorsy stuff as well as culture. Any recommendations?

Very expensive housing. Crowded, a lot of traffic. In the Front Range, you basically want to live near your work.

If work isn't an issue, I personally would go somewhere that is cheaper and lower key. Golden is one possibility.

I live in Westminster which is about 15 minutes away. I love it here but I am 21 with no children and Boulder has a lot of college kids and is more of a college town now. My aunt and uncle raised 3 kids in Boulder back in the day and even then the town and schools were huge. A different city you might want to look at is Longmont great booming city that is not too far from Boulder about 20 mins and about 45 mins to downtown Denver. One thing is for sure there are tons of out door activities in the summer and in winters any where in Colorado.

I was born in Boulder and I grew up there. I love it. It is expensive but its very clean. The mountains are beautiful and Boulder has a height law which buildings cannot be too tall. The tallest structure in the town is one of the dorm buildings. The way the city of Boulder is setup makes it in some ways feel smaller than it is, it feels homey. It is liberal but not the way people think. It is an open minded community but it is not a bunch of hippies just wandering around. There are traffic issues because the streets were not meant to handle the volume they do and unfortunately there is no real way to fix them. I can say that I also lived in Longmont and I would not recommend it. Longmont is not as nice as Boulder and it has a turkey factory which frequently makes the city stink.... and I mean stink as far as a mile plus away from the factory. The historical area of Boulder has absolutely beautiful houses but is also the most expensive part of Boulder. There are affordable options in Boulder, for instance my mom got a Habitat for Humanity house in Boulder. At any rate I think Boulder is a wonderful place to grow up in. Plus I graduated from Boulder Valley School district and I think the schools in Boulder are very good.

PS.... Yes there is the University of Colorado there but it really is not as much of a college town as a lot of people think. Aside for The Hill and Pearl Street Mall Boulder is mainly normal people who don't go to the university.

Usually mild winters, mountains in your back yard, liberal, academic, and hippie. Lots of young people as well as people who don't want to grow up. Very few people who live in Boulder are from Colorado, so you will fit right in.

Most of the people who work in Boulder can't afford to live there. The latest figures for the average home price in Denver is over $300k. Boulder is FAR more expensive than Denver. Boulder is pretty. It's a liberal, quasi hippie town with plenty of outdoor activity nearby, but you REALLY have to want to live there to make the sacrifices.
