The Federal minimum wage is mandated and states that are below the new federal minimum wage will have to raise thier minimum wages to meeth the federal mandate. If the federal government raised the minimum wage to $6.85, the same as in Ohio, there would be no effect in your state, $6.85 is still the minimum wage. However, in a state like Minnesota where the state minimum wage is $6.15 or Iowa where it is $5.15, the minimum wage will increase to $6.85.

The minimum wage will be raised in three installments over three years raising the minimum wage 70 cents per hour, per year. if your state is below the Federal minimum it must raise it to the Federal level! Which equates to $ 1456 per year if you are working 40 hours a week for 52 weeks.

Minimum wage is federally mandated. Each state has to at least meet it.
