It's long overdue, about time, & necessary.

I think it's unimportant when compared to the very serious environmental issues we face.

However, I know a lot of people are up-&-arms over this issue.

Someone on Y!A remarked a week or two ago that minimum wage is intended as a wage to be paid to young workers who are just starting out in the workforce. I think this person is uninformed about Economics. There are many, many jobs that can garner only a minimum wage, and these will always need to be filled by someone. Somebody's got to the dirty work, in other words. Not everyone can be at the top of the economic ladder. In fact, in order for there to be people at the top of the economic ladder, there have to be lots of people at the bottom. Wake up and smell the (Starbucks) coffee!

Also, many corporations have executives and managers with incredibly huge salaries. The increase in minimum wage could be carved out of their salaries, rather than covered by an increase in the price of the products & services these corporations sell. Wouldn't that be nice for the middle class? Guess I'm the one being naive one now. ;-)

Sure it might cause a few problems for smaller businesses.. but how about the people who have to live on minimum wage, what would you suggest? Sure a better education might help..but not everyone is able to attend a 4 yr. college, trade school etc.. Some just don't have it and this long overdue increase might help out.

I guess I just don't get it. If the minimum wage is a good thing and doesn't hurt the economy why not make it $20.00 / hr. If you can't do that because it would hurt the economy then doesn't the minimum wage hurt the economy at any level you set it. And if it hurts the economy the only one's that really benefit are the self serving politicians that promote it.

Those who are for it have no concept of how business or this economy works.
Look at your paycheck, your gross is about half of what your employer pays you.
Everything you don't get is taken up in more taxes, i.e. payroll taxes and benefits, the larget expense by most employers is payroll and payroll taxes.
When you get paid, you actually get less than half of what you earned... the governement takes the largest portion of it... twice.
Then they want to tell the business how much to pay you... and them....
its a real nice scam the government has going.

I think its a good and important change but also too little. The average worker needs more of the pie. The CEOs are taking to much of it.

everyone loves a raise in pay--but at what expense? Everything will go up in price--and also jobs will be lost. So who really wins the increase?

It will hurt the economy, because private business will have to spend more to pay their employees. After they take that out of the bottom line, their profits will go down.
