grease, it was waay better.
high school musical was so cheap., saying that it was an immitation of grease is true, but it didnt do Grease justice.
grease will always have more of an impact than any other movie immitating it because it is the original, & it was very well done.

:D

Is this a serious question? When Grease came out it was a national phenomenon. I hadn't even heard of high school musical until you asked this question. And how can you question Grease's staying power when there is a show on TV right now called "Grease: You're the one that I Want?" High School Musical is a flash in the pan show that high schools will do but not something that we will ever see 25-30 years down the road.

You have made the assumption that High School Musical is hip. I'm not that sure it is. It smacks of Disney-driven idol-creation, but if you are old enough to remember when Grease! hit the big screen, it was a grassroots phenomenon. It was unbelievable how long theaters booked that film to run. And the film did nothing to stop scads of people wanting to see it (again!) live on stage. High School Musical never started on stage. It was never a musical. And no self-respecting stage director would allow the stereotyped cardboard cut-out of a drama queen that turns up in HSM to represent anyone. HSM has a long way to go before it's rightfully compared to anything Broadway or the West End produces.

Whoa! Just read the thread. Can anyone say generation gap? Running on cable forever now defines classic theater? Yikes! Where does that put West Side?

Grease, of course. "High School Musical" was simply created by Disney to be just a television musical, it's just gone a little too far. "Grease" is and will always be an all-time classic, but "High School Musical" is just a faddish excuse for children not having any contemporary musicals made for them. "Grease" has stood the test of time, on Broadway, on the silver screen, and on the auditorium at the local high school. "High School Musical", however has just been a recent success and will eventually fade, more than likely. Sooner or later the kids who originally loved "High School Musical" will get older and grow out of that.

High School Musical is only known by kids between the ages of 9-15. The only other people who know about it are those who are unfortunate enough to have stumbled across it accidentally or those who are unfortunate enough to have children who are obsessed with it.

People outside the age range of 9-15 enjoy Grease.

I vote for Grease.

...Grease. HSM is horrible, the acting is atrocious and the leads cannot sing. At all. I'm not a Grease fan, to be honest, but I like it loads better. And just a minor rant, the show Grease is loads better then the movie. I hate how everyone my age/younger (I'm sixteen) is obsessed when it when it's clearly horrible. Ugh.

I think "Grease" will have more lasting power because the original movie starring Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta was so terrific in every way that it leaves an indelible mark in our hearts enabling us to always love the musical no matter who is performing it.

Grease........because it's the original "high school musical". The majority of people know at least one song from it and the majority have seen it at least twice.........as for High School Musical.....well, its a cheap imitation that only the teeny boppers of today will remember.
