Most of the time a reboot will fix that problem.

If not, check in the BIOS to see if it has been turned off by the USB mouse.

If both of those fail, RIGHT click MY COMPUTER and scroll down to PROPERTIES. In PROPERTIES go to HARDWARE, in HARDWARE find your KEYBOARD MOUSE and RIGHT click on it and choose UNINSTALL. SHUT DOWN the comuter, while shut down remove the USB MOUSE and then start the computer. Windows if XP, will reinstall the drivers.

If that fails, go to SYSTEM RESTORE and restore the computer to an earlier date, pick a date from the highlighted ones where your computer worked the way you want it to now.

Personally, I had to stop using my USB mouse because I had this exact same problem. Try using your driver disc and reinstalling the software, reboot and right click on my computer and hit manage. Go to drivers and highlight the mouse and keyboard sections and hit scan for hardware changes.

The problem can be related:

1. to a corrupt driver
2. the ribbon cable underneath the panel
3. the actual pad itself

The drivers should be on your hard disk un something in the form of c:\drivers or c:\tools

Normally the pad is interconnected with the palm rest so if you have to replace the pad you'll be replacing the palm rest.

have you checked the utilities that came with your laptop? maybe the function for the laptop touchpad is turned off that's why it isn't responding. try looking at the utilities of your laptop.

For example:

if it is installed in your system, it can be found at:

Start >> All Programs >> VAIO (Sony, Utilities, Tools, etc)

Hope this answers your question
