The long term effects: the US lost the moral "high ground"; its hard for us to stand of non-proliferation in the world, when we were the only country to use a nuclear weapon against civilians. The black cloud of nuclear holocaust has hung over every foreign policy since 1945.
Short term effects:
1. brought the sudden end to WWII
2. stopped Soviet hegemy in the Orient, similar to their bloc in eastern europe

In the short term, the emperor Hirohito and his generals conferred and decided not to go on with the war. In particular, they would not arm the population with sharpened sticks and urge them to defend the home islands. In the long term, the U.S. helped Japan get back on its feet, and today Japanese companies produce more cars in the U.S. than U.S. auto makers. Also in the long term, the Soviet Union was impressed with what might happen if they pushed too far in Europe.
