A key is the section of a map that explains the symbols, colors and scale of a map. It is what tells you that the green areas are vegitation and that the yellow is sand and that the two pick axes are mine shafts to avoid falling down. The scale is the section that tells you how far the distances are that are represented on the map.

Homework help, right?
The key on the map is used to help people identify certain places or objects. For example, it would be hard to identify things on a blank map of the US. By adding a key, people can identify things it lists, such as mountains, lakes, oceans, rivers, towns. It just makes it a whole lot easier.

What are keys for? To open, isn't it. Keys on maps are to "open" them. To let people get "inside" and read them easily.
