Something on Leonardo Da Vinci's contributions to modern society, science or engineering. Very interesting research I would think. Another idea might be the birth of the computer age. If you haven't read up on the early computers you may find this fun too. The earliest computers didn't even require electricity and look how far we've come. As for language, sign language and it's origins and the origins of written language are interesting topics as well. Ptolemy and his work with navigation and astronomy is great stuff too.

I've always been interested in the relationship between language and vernacular used during earlier times such as Shakespeare's, and the evolved language of today. This could also be the genesis of an argument regarding the quality of literature then versus the quality of literature now.

Another idea would be the popularity of the Harry Potter series vs. Tolkien's works of the time. They're actually quite similar and could make an interesting paper.
