Game designers have developed enormously fun card games that are still simple to learn (as opposed to say Contract Bridge).
For bales of laughter, stage a high noon western with a game of Bang! Players take on roles of lawmen, outlaws and renegades and play cards in turn to eliminate your enemies. The problem? Apart from the Sheriff, everyone else's role is hidden until he dies.
Start each new game with one of 32 characters with special abilities and let the bullets fly. A multitude of event cards only lends to the chaos and mayhem. Fast to learn, fast to play, enormous western-theme fun. Bob Marley's "I shot the Sheriff" is compulsory listening.
Similar games: Munchkin, Killer Bunnies, Saboteur
For a game with more strategic depth, try Take Five, where the object is to lay down cards and collect them when there are five of them. You want to collect stacks with green bulls and avoid the red bulls.
Similar games: Loco!
For games that focus on player interaction (as opposed to what kind of cards I get/play) try Bohanza where players bid and trade for beans that they want. Convincing other players to trade with you is almost as important as your strategic decisions.
The ultimate in player interaction card games which gets the whole table screaming will have to be Billionaire or Pit. On the word 'go' everyone starts trading away cards they don't need to collect a full set of 9. (think heart attack). A round typically ends with everyone breathless in 3 minutes and waiting to charge back on to the trade floor.

Are you looking for traditional games or newer ones? Get a Book of Hoyle (official rules to card games) and there are numerous ones from solitaire to poker explained. I love to play cribbage and canasta. Bridge is fun too, but difficult to learn. Go to meetup.com and see if there are any groups near you that would be willing to teach you!

We play 31, but I was recently taught a game called golf, which was also fun. You can probably get the rules off the internet.
