The cat!!!
There is no more independent animal than a cat!!
If you leave them a way to get in and out, and food and water for them, you could stay gone for a week and not have to worry about a cat!!
They are the only animal you can do this with that I know of!!

Cats, of course! Truly independant, they make you work for their affection, not sell-outs like dogs, who will still mistakenly love you even if you kick the crap out of them!
