The Hittites began to build an empire from around 1650 BC. They were able to do this becuase they were the first to learn how to extract iron ore and smelt it. In fact, for a long time, thay had a monopoly on IRON. They made tools and weapons from it. Their iron weapons were of course harder and sharper than the weapons of bronze and copper which their enemies used. Thus, we might sya, they had superior weaponry in their time. As can be imagined, the Hittites tried to keep this valuable technology to themselves. But when the Hittite empire broke apart in around 1200 BC, Hittite smithies migrated to other lands and introdiced iron technology.

The Hittites had advances in their military, partially because of trade with the Assyrians and the Babylonians that allowed them to access iron. I disagree that they had a monopoly on that however; in fact, iron was not readily available in Anatolia until much after the fall of the Hittites (10th - 8th cent. B.C. is more likely a date.)

The Hittites as well had the ability to incorporate aspects of surrounding cultures into their own which did diversify and give way to the expanded pantheon, cultural advances and growth of the empire. Though they were xenophobic, they overcame that particularly for trade. Finds in Charcamesh and in the East of Anatolia support that.
