All this talk of a paltry increase in the minimum wage misses the point entirely. A $2 increase won’t somehow radically change the fortunes of the financially destitute, but it will cause many small business owners to either cut back employment or close entirely. You have to be living in a fairy tale world to think otherwise. I normally don’t side with Republicans on too many things, but Democrats look absurd when trying to champion this cause. A child could do the math. A $2 dollar hike in the minimum wage translates to 16 more dollars a day in earned wages if we, for the sake of argument, ignore tax or other pay deductions. $16 a day for a five-day workweek is 80 more dollars per week. This translates into 4,160 dollars per year more for the average family, again without taking into account deductions from federal income tax, social security, and medical benefits where they apply.

That is a miniscule improvement, which won’t translate into any real benefits for the family, and will definitely NOT will lead to them ascending the economic ladder anytime soon. The Democrats are merely throwing people a bone.

Ultimately, policy that is tailored to succeed in helping families rise above their enslavement to substandard living has to channel funds that will make education more accessible to them, so that they can be empowered to break free from the world of minimum wage.

Slow down. Even if they passed a minimum wage bill and the President plans to sign it, there hasn't been time to send it to him for a signature.

As long as President Bush (or any republican) is in office, the democrats will complain.
