My question is who advised you to do a rectal temperature?
You don't use the conventional ther, ometer for rectal temps. You need to have the approriate one that has a BLUE bulb. This is so others dont stick it in their mouth after where its been.
Thermometers can only be sterilised with alcohol, not tap water and you run the risk of E Coli infections for any one else who uses it after where you have attempted to put it.
Ear thermometers are much easier and better to use on children than a rectal probe.Especially on 3-5 year olds

It's pretty standard to use the armpit and add 1 degree. You could hurt a child that squirms.

Look, I'm not trying to sound wierd or whatever, but I STILL remember wen i was a kid and my mother did that to me and my stomache still turns when I remember it. For the sake of there ability to remember that and there DIGNITY, no matter the age, go buy one for the ear, PLEASE. I kno i sound wierd but its gross and from my experience, i dont think any parent should do that. theres plenty other places to do that and with her squirming, that would be a big hint to me... Just my opinion...

Oh, at 3 years of age that's a hard one....I would try waiting for her morning or afternoon nap or take her temperature either under the arm or in the mouth instead. Sorry, I can't help you anymore then that....Good Luck....
PEACE!!!

Get an ear thermometer. She's a little old to hold down for that anyway. You could hurt her if she's squirming.

At three years old, just use an ear thermometer. That way, there is no discomfort and only takes a minute.
