people talk about "employement record" like it is a document somewhere. Just find another job and when you are interviewing, just tell them that "you do not want your current employer contacted since they do not know you are interviewing".

Do it if you have to, but like people said, it is not good to burn bridges.

You could. However, it will end up in your being officially terminated and it will not reflect well on your employment record. Just give the 2 weeks notice and then quit. If you are a temp. then, once your contract is up, don't renew it.

You actually have to give notice, otherwise, what is likely to happen is that they just fire you. Also, if you just abandoned the job, you cannot claim unemployment, as they can deny firing you, since you essentially did quit.

Basically, you lose either way, so go and get yourself fired, if you really wanna leave, or give your two-weeks' notice.

In CA if you don't come to work for three consecutive shifts they have the legal right to fire you. And here they have to have your last paycheck within 72 hours if you quit. If you're fired I beleive it is 24 hours

Sure, just don't ask them for a reference. Also, don't count on getting the next job easily.

NEVER burn your bridges behind you. Even if you're totally mad at your company, give them notice and act better than the company.

It's called Job Abandonment.
But why burn your bridges? Give the two-week notice. You'd be surprised how that could come back--YEARS later, and hurt you.

Hahaha, we've all been there. I've done it myself, although I wouldn't recommend it. Unless they are clueless, it's pretty much assumed you quit if you don't go back.
