For the first part you would distribute the 9 by multiplying both the 5 and the 3a by the 9. You would then combine like terms (the ones with an a after it and the ones without an a) , by adding or subtracting.

first you need to distribute the 9 with multiplication. you get (9x5) - (9 x 3a) + 12a - 23 which equals 45 - 27a + 12a - 23. combining like terms gives you (45 - 23) + (-27a + 12a) = 22 - 15a

9(5-3a) + 12a -23

Step 1 Distribute 9(5-3a) by doing 9x5 & 9x-3a

45-27a + 12a -23

Step 2 Add like terms

-27a+12a+45-23
-15a+22

then, combine the like terms
22-15a is the solution--- -15A+22 another way to show it.
