Hey Khoi,

Necessary Roughness by Marie G. Lee

Chan Kim and his twin sister Young had tons of friends and very good life in L.A. That is until their dad finds out that his brother needs help with his store in Minnesota, so they have to move. When the Kims arrive in their small town in Minnesota, they find that they are the only Asian family in town and it is much harder to get adjusted to their new lifestyle. This is a very good book about how a family struggles in a new town but finally gets respect from neighbors and all the kids at school.

2nd Review:

The story is about Chan Jung Kim, a Korean teenager who moves with his family to a small town in Minnesota from Los Angeles. Before Chan's family moves to Minnesota, Chan was the star on his soccer team. His twin sister; Young is in a famous orchestra, and his family's business was going well. But now, the family has to start a new life in a small town where there are no Koreans or other Asians. When Chan goes to his new school, he joins the football team as the kicker. But when he joins the team, it becomes very difficult for him because some of the players and some coaches discriminate against him. This story talks about the struggles of Chan and his family as they start a whole different life in a small town of Minnesota.

3rd Review:

Chan Kim of Los Angeles is the main character of this novel. He is Asian, but he still lives life as a normal kid. He plays sports and is very good at soccer. In L.A, they are rather wealthy and doing well. The worst then came because the father has become a drug dealer; so they have to move to Iron River, Minnesota. This means the Kim Family has to start a brand new life in a new city. Chan made a friend with a football player. The team needed a kicker. Chan then became a football player, but while this was happening a lot of bad things were going on at home and in the neighborhood. One bad doing was how the father was still drug dealing. They also had to deal with people calling the family racial/prejudice words due to the Kim family’s ethnicity. They have to also make a new life and get money by making a new store, which was how they became wealthy in L.A. They began to learn how hard life is getting, from when they used it wrong at first.
