How did Acura get its name and how did it get started?

Acura is a brand name used by the Japanese car manufacturer Honda in the US, Canada and Hong Kong since March 1986 to market luxury automobiles and near-luxury vehicles. The brand was introduced to Mexico in 2004 and to the Chinese market in 2006. It is also planned to extend Acura to the Japanese domestic market in 2008. With the Acura brand, Honda is credited with being the first to tap into a market for luxury Japanese cars outside Japan. Before Acura, automobiles exported from Japan were primarily economical in design and largely targeted at low-cost consumers.


Acura is a play-on-words with accuracy.

It started in March 20,1986 here in the U.S. with only 2 models. The Legend and the Integra. Trying to tap into the luxury car market and 20 yrs later here they are offering 6 models. And the president of Volvo said they wouldn't make it as a luxury carmaker 20 yrs ago

one day honda said, hey, we need a luxury division like all the other automakers have. So they took an english word, Accurate, meaning good and 'right on the money' and changed it to Acura...so Americans would associate a good word with their car, thus thinking it was a good car.

It's a marketing exercise and a spin-off from Honda.

The name resulted from a marketing brainstorming session where they were looking for an unused trade name that sounded like quality.

It got started because Honda wanted to sell Hondas for more money in the same way as Toyota used Lexus to add perceived class to Toyotas.

Honda took the H off of their upscale cars and replaced it with an A

not so sure about the name, but it is hondas "upscale" brand. used to compete with BMW and Mercedes.
