Finding the right spot is the ticket. The spot needs to be quiet, comfortable, and motivating. If you are being sidetracked by a computer, go to the kitchen table. If the kitchen table is in a noisy place, find another corner of your house to get things done. I usually recommend my students to set a timer. Predict how long it might take you to do an assignment. Say, it is 30 minutes. Set the timer and get to work. Try to beat your time - while still doing quality work! Reward yourself for getting the work done. Don't set the timer for too long. You might want to break the time in half. You could work for 20, take a break, and work for 20 more. You are on the right track of seeing that you have a problem. Good luck at getting your work done.

the best thing to do is to have one place where you do your homework ... always. it should not be sitting on your bed or in the middle of the family room with everyone else. find a place away from the phone, music and the computer ... unless you need it for research. then use it ONLY for that.

make this space your own and make it conducive to studying. also, block off the same time each afternoon or evening to study. get in a schedule and it will become routine. try to have everything you might need so you'll have no excuse to get up and lose focus: paper, index cards, pencils, pens, erasers, ruler, etc.

the last thing, and it might sound strange, is to have a koosh or stress ball. often if you keep the "wandering" part of your brain busy with that, the other part will have a much easier time concentrating.

good luck!

I have the same problem...here are some simple solutions. In order to follow these, though, you might have to act as though you have no control over your body, or that you are controlling yourself from another place. First, turn off the computer, don't think about if you MIGHT need it for something, just turn it off (this is where you will need to act as another person...I can't turn off the computer sometimes and it becomes the biggest hindrance.) Second, move to a room or an area where there is NO noise...nothing clicking, no one tapping, no music/tv/sounds in the background. Third, if you find your mind wandering, just get up, stretch, get a glass of water, and sit back down again. Good luck.

If you dont get used to studying outside class time you will fail in higher education as all your study time is on your own time, so unless you want to spend your life cleaning toilets or eating from the trash you will train your mind to stay focused
