The federal debt is currently too high too fund such expensive ventures as the 2 you mention, and the strain on our nation's treasury continues to grow because of the war on terror (mainly in Iraq), and several other issues that need a lot of federal funding.

The largest problem to universal health care, is the cost.

the federal government spends approx 590 million dollars a year on health care( medicare, medicaid and the VA).

the federal government spends $5,000 per patient per year for medicare.

with 300 million Americans, that it would cost 1.5 trillion dollars per year for universal health care.

in 2005, the federal government had 2.1 trillion dollars in tax revenue and 794 billion of that was social security revenue.

so the problem is, just how and where to come up with an additional 910 billion dollars every year.

corporate and individual tax revenue was 1.2 trillion in 2005.

to raise an additional 910 billion, would require a 75% across the board increase in corporate and individual tax revenue.

the largest problem, is just how to move all the dollars now spent privately for health insurance into the federal coffers to fund universal health care.
