In the move Barnyard there were male dairy cows and they had utters, and I thought that was strange because I thought only female cows had utters.

The term dairy cows refers to certain breeds of cows that produce more milk than your normal breeds of cows that are raised for meat production. Below is a website listing some of the different dairy breeds with pictures of each.

Only female cows can produce milk. And only female cows have udders.

Don't get confused about what the one person said as far as milking bulls. That is called AI (artificial insemination) in the cattle industry and it's totally irrelevant to your question.

As far as the cattle terms:

Cow can be used to express either a male or female. Cows can also be used to replace the word cattle. And cow can be used to refer to distinctly a female.

Heiffer is usually the name given to a young female that hasn't given birth yet.

Steer is the name for a male that has been castrated.

Bull is the name for a male that has not been castrated.

Cow is sometimes used to describe a female that has given birth.

Well think about it, do male humans have nipples? Yes so male cows would as have nipples. But no the male cow does not make milk.

"Calves born to dairy cows are separated from their mothers immediately after birth. The half that are born female are raised to replace older dairy cows in the milking herd. The other half of the calves are male, and because they will never produce milk, they are raised and slaughtered for meat. Most are killed for beef, but about one million are used for veal." - www.factoryfarming.com

No. There is bull's - uncasterated males, steers - casterated males, heifers - females that haven't had a calf and cows - females that have had a calf. Only the females have udders. Bulls have testicles and steers have a cod(a sort of sack where they've been casterated). Bulls are milked, but not for milk, for semen, which is used in Artificial Insemenation programs, and other genetic programs.

Cows are considered female of course and that is the slight problem with the movie. The bulls do not have utters which in the movie every bouvine does.
Cow- female
Heifer- Female
Steer- male
bull- male
Bouvine - both genders

Yep, that's kind of strange. Only female cows can give milk. Never seen a male be able to give milk.

By definition, anything that is called a cow is female. A male bovine is called a bull.

That's the one thing about that movie that really bugs me. I dont know why they did that..maybe because it would have been wrong to show testicles hanging? But still...male cows do not have udders..so they should not have put them there.

Cow..female bovine who has given birth
Heiffer..female bovine who has not given birth
Bull..intact male
Steer..neutered male
