One Fish 2 Fish red Fish Blue Fish (Dr. Seuss), aw I loved Madeline, too! also, the tale of Despereaux, because of Winn Dixie, Matilda, Charlie and the Chocolate production facility, James and the wide Peach, The sequence of unlucky events, Cricket in cases sq., Stuart Little and Charlotte's information superhighway :)

Richard Scarry's "Best Word Book Ever". I know its on Amazon, but I think its out of print because the price is fairly high ($39.00). It was so enjoyable when I was very, very little. I learned a lot of new words from it too.

It was a textbook used in private schools. It had illustrations and stories to link with grammar. The main story was about 3 siblings (two girls, one boy) who lived in a red house and one day they found Quetzalcoatl (the mayan god) and they became friends and learned lots of things from him. The illustrations were wonderful.

The Lorax by Dr. Suess...I know, off-the-wall, but my hippie-ish parents thought it was a good way to teach an impressionable young mind about ecology, social responsibility and the dangers of wastefulness. i would have to say it worked, as I'm as close to a modern day hippie as they were.

I remember "The Monster at the End of This Book" staring lovable, furry ol' Grover. I loved that book. I would read it over and over.

Postman Pig by Scarry. The one I have is discontinued but there are so many books with the same characters. I still have it and will give it to my children.
